Susan D. Engle - May 2007
Our first contributor is Susan D. Engle and her series of dandelion images. Click Susan's menu item to the right and ENJOY!
Susan provides the following description of her images...
Did you ever wonder what happens between a dandelion's full bloom and its "puff ball" that you blew on as a child? I had never thought about it until one morning on a very gray day in early May when I walked around our yard and spotted a patch of "white-ish somethings" sheltered between our forsythia bushes, near the south side of our house. Once I saw what it was, I ran inside and grabbed my digital camera. Because there was a very slight breeze, the photo subjects would not stay still long enough for accurate focus, so it was pure luck that I got a few decent shots.
A couple weeks later, I saw a good "puff ball" in the front yard which I picked and carefully carried indoors. For the "back of the head" shot, I laid it on a dark quilted pad (and later blurred the background in Photoshop Elements). For the final picture, I held the puff ball in one hand near the side of a dark bookcase, then took the photo using my other hand. But just before that, I had accidentally touched the head, so a small part of it became partially detached. Do you think the resulting "little fairy princess" has a new bow in her hair?
Special thanks to Mike Smith for his helpful suggestions at the Digital SIG in May for enhancements to try, using Photoshop Elements, in order to bring out details and a more white-ish color of the beautiful "flower" that had captured my attention that day in the yard.
